Future Studies
Welcome to the APEC Center for Technology Foresight
The APEC Center for Technology Foresight aims to develop and diffuse foresight capability across APEC. Foresight helps governments, businesses and organisations to establish directions, choose priorities and manage change. Since its launch in February 1998, the CTF has completed six international foresight studies, designed and supported many more studies at national and organisational level, co-hosted an international foresight conference and provided training and consultancy to many APEC member economies. The CTF also runs an APEC Technology Foresight Network, a global database of foresight practitioners, projects and publications (see: http://www.apectf.net) and yearly foresight trainining workshop.
The CTF is a project of the Industrial Science and Technology Working Group of APEC. It is hosted by the National Science and Technology Development Agency of Thailand.

In relative context, “future studies” is one of foresight foundations and its principles consist of policy development, strategic planning, future studies. Future studies methods have been significantly developed throughout the years. Future studies shifts its approach from predictive to explorative ones.
Future studies could be described as six pillars of future studies as follows:
1. Mapping the future
2. Anticipating the future
3. Macrohistory
4. Deepening the future
5. Creating Alternatives
6. Transformation

Future studies (also called futurism, futurology, and futures studies) is the study of the medium to long-term future, by extrapolating present technological, economic or social trends, or by attempting to predict future trends. Extrapolation is just one of many dozens of methods and techniques used in futures research; others include scenarios, the Delphi method, brainstorming, and morphological analysis. Futurology also includes normative or preferred futures, but the real contribution is to connect both extrapolated (exploratory) and normative research to explore better strategies.
