The APEC Center for Technology Foresight, under the Industrial Science and Technology Working Group of APEC, proudly presents the fourth international training workshop on “Strategic Foresight in Modern Management”. The highly rated course by participants in 2002 - 2005, is again refined for the 2006 to include more case studies and practical exercises to keep participants turned in to new planning models. LEAD FACILITATOR:
The Workshop will be designed and delivered by Professor Ron Johnston FTSE, an internationally recognized expert in charting the future through the application of the tools of foresight. He is the founder and Executive Director of the Australian Centre for Innovation and Professor in the Faculty of Engineering, University of Sydney, Australia. www.aciic.org.au. Prof Johnston created the foresight training workshop held in Bangkok since 2002. Over the past ten years, he has led more than one hundred futures and foresight projects for private and public sector organizations in Asia, Europe and the Pacific. The focuses of these projects have ranged across:

• Long-term planning
• Strategic defence and development planning
• Establishment of research and technology development priorities
• Identification of preferred socio-economic and cultural futures
• Service delivery needs and possibilities
• Business and industry strategies


PROGRAM

Day 1:

Introduction and Objectives of the Course
Identify the future orientation and interests of fellow participants,
understand clearly the objectives of the course, and outline desired outcomes.

The Use of Foresight around the World
There has been a dramatic growth in the variety of applications of foresight in international organizations and in countries around the world.

Introduction to the Foresight Tools for Strategic Management
An overview of the major tools, their methods and assumptions, emphasizing the appropriate contexts and objectives for the application of each tool, and tool combinations.

Environmental Scanning - the Foundation Steps
Explanations of environmental scanning, the key steps in preparing for any approach to managing the future.

Day 2:
Scenario Planning
The major alternative for future management is scenario planning, which generates a range of possible alternative futures and then seeks to establish courses of action that are likely to be robust under this range of possible futures.

Technology Roadmapping (TRM)
Examine the principles and processes of TRM, a foresight tool used increasingly in the past few years to organize the application of technical and industrial expertise to determining appropriate technological routes and customer needs.
Day 3:

More Effective Strategic Planning through Foresight
Discover how the well-established processes of strategic planning can be greatly enhanced by the integrating focussed foresight into the consideration of opportunities, threats, and uncertainties

The Essential Role of Foresight in Risk Management and Contingency Planning
Every organisation, and manager, recognises they are exposed to a greater range and variety of risks, and that tools based on past experience and extrapolation are limited.

Participants will have an excellent opportunity to explore Bangkok in the afternoon of this day.

Day 4:

Change Management in an Uncertain World
In a world where innovation and uncertainty are the new rule, forward-looking change management is becoming an essential tool for organisational survival

Effective Management of Future Projects
Explore the major logistic requirements in the design, performance and implementation of the tools (and tool combinations) and develop a checklist to guide the management and execution of any futures exercise.

USEFUL INFORMATION ABOUT THAILAND
Local Time: GMT +7 hours. Thailand observes the Western 12-month calendar. Religious and seasonal ceremonies follow lunar time.

Climate: Thailand is warm and rather humid tropical country with monsoonal climate. Temperature highest in March and April, with average of 28°C to 38 °C. September is in the end of rainy season and winter begins in October. Warm casual clothes are recommended for traveling and informal wear is acceptable in most places.

Language: Thai is the national and official language while English is widely spoken and understood in major cities, particularly in Bangkok and in business circles.

Currency: Baht is the Thai Currency. Bank notes are in 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 baht and coins in 1, 5, and 10 baht. Currently, it has an exchange rate of approx. 40 Thai Baht for 1 US Dollar.
